What We Do

WE ARE CALLED BY OUR FAITH TO:

1. SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY

We directly support people affected by deportation who call or visit the Voces de la Frontera office in Milwaukee. Sanctuary staff and volunteers help people visit loved ones in detention centers, accompany community members to immigration hearings in Chicago, provide referrals to trusted attorneys, and hold a monthly support group for people affected by deportation.

Sanctuary holds an interfaith prayer vigil for people affected by deportation and their supporters the first Tuesday of every month at Ascension Lutheran Church at 6:30. The church is located at 1236 S. 27th street in Milwaukee where all are welcome. Sanctuary also holds a lunchtime prayer vigil the first Thursday of every month at noon outside the ICE field office in Milwaukee, located at 310 East Knapp Street. If you need help or are interested in being a volunteer with the Sanctuary Network for people affected by deportation, please contact us.

2. RAISE CONSCIOUSNESS

We are a network of religious people of many faiths and organizations working toward social justice through education and advocacy. Our members and volunteers visit active network churches as well as new ones to speak about the issues that immigrant communities face; why they are damaging and how we can work together to change them. We also facilitate Know Your Civil Rights trainings for immigrants so that they are actively aware of their rights.

3. ORGANIZE THE COMMUNITY TO CREATE CHANGE

The NSM views immigration issues from a faith perspective and recognizes the common thread that many religions have in that it is our moral duty to welcome immigrants.

By educating and actively working with faith communities we work for changes in laws that affect immigrants on a local, state and national level; specifically to address the crisis of deportations.

Additionally, we offer a comprehensive leadership-building course for immigrant women, designed to empower and organize women in the community who have been affected by the deportation process. More details can be found on the Mujeres Líderes page.

We are involved in frequent public action which you can learn about and be a part of by checking out the events page as well as our Facebook page.
